Integrative Medicine and Patients affected by Lung Cancer

Patients with lung cancer are particularly vulnerable to heavily promoted claims for unproved or disproved “alternatives.” Integrative medicine options of care are getting increased attention in recent years by both patients and health care practitioners. Mind-body modalities and massage therapy can reduce anxiety, mood disturbance, and chronic pain. Acupuncture assists the control of pain and other side effects and helps reduce levels of pain medication required. Trials of acupuncture for chemotherapy-induced neuropathy and postthoracotomy pain show promising results.
An article in the journal Chest reviewed these options of care including some others.

A recent review article published in JACM Special Issue  of Integrative Oncology raises important points related to approaching people affected by lung cancer.

A chapter dedicated to lung cancer is available in Integrative Oncology textbook second edition by Abrams and Weil.

The following foods might have some clues for benefit
in lung cancer prevention:

Apples and lung cancer risk

  Papaya and Lung cancer risk

Leafy green vegetables

Sweet potatoes

Physical activity can affect survival. A study with patients affected by lung cancer (NSCLC)  revealed that patients that utilized step counting and were in the high activity level, had better survival than inactive patients.  LINK
